So, something is working. My Clifinar blog has moved from position 6 to position 5 in Google.com. At this rate, another 4 posts and I’m up there. If it works – who knows what the others are up to and I also don’t have all the time to spend on it.

Clifinar News – 1 post moved me 2 places up
July 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Before my post this morning my Clifinar blog was in position 8 on Google. About 2 hours after I posted my morning Clifinar post, it appeared on position 6 with the new post already indexed. I will keep writing a post, I guess the fresh content was liked by the Google bot. Another thing that may have helped is that I linked to Google.com on my post.
Does Google like to see its own name up there? Perhaps… Let’s wait and see…

Shades of Cloaking (Not a post about fashion)
July 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz.org wrote a very interesting post about White hat to black hat cloaking going through all the shades in between light grey, dark grey, almost black. I am not going to describe exaclty what was written, since the interesting thing here is the reaction that he received from Matt Cutts. For Matt Cutts, all cloaking is bad in Google’s eyes, to which Rand diplomatically agreed, stating however that if there was a good reason to do some cloaking in some situations it may be acceptable. Matt disagreed and said that without a shadow of a doubt cloaking was “high risk behavior” and that if Google found any cloaking for whatever reason, that site would be penalized.
I found the comments here very interesting. It’s important to understand what your goal is and how you want to act. I suggest that if you are not sure, you should stick to white hat. Cloaking post
I wander what Clif will say in the next Clifinar about this.

Clifinar SEO Seminars – Article
June 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment
So, many people have been writing articles and submitting them to various article sites with links. I, myself wrote an article about basic SEO tips and tricks that can be learnt in a Clifinar. Clifinar article
Articles are a good way to get content out there with links back to your site/blog and what’s good is that they are free. Try to write a good article about your field using your chosen keyword in the title of the article and using it again in your article a few times, don’t exaggerate, up to 7% should do it. In the article the keyword can be linked to your website. Some of them use no-follow links, but it’s ok, becuase even if you don’t get link juice, you get more content indexed on Search Engines and also traffic.
Here are a few free article sites that I know are good:
articlesbase.com
goarticles.com
ezinearticles.com
And there are plenty more.

June 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment
The Clifinar contest is getting really interesting.
All of the contestants are putting in really hard SEO efforts into gaining the number 1 position in Google for the keyword clifinar.
Shimrit has written a very interesting post about the tactics used in the clifinar competition and what works best. Read it here : clifinar
I learnt the hard way that wordpress does not allow meta tags any more after downloading the plugin several times and spending a few hours looking for where to upload it. So although I agree that meta tags help, my hands here are tied and it seems, so are other bloggers, so here we need to work on links links and more quality links and content, of course.
